St. Xavier High School debuts suicide hotel Bank that promotes mental health

Springfield Township, OHIO – If you went to St. Xavier’s basketball game on Friday evening, you were probably met by eight cabins of sources for mental health care.

“Our boys really walked with this initiative and they really made mental health material at this school,” said Emmy Waterkotte, an employee of St. Xavier High School.

That initiative is the school’s partnership with sources of strength, an organization that teaches children how to talk about mental health.

“One of the things we do is a kind of electricity approach. We want to give them to talk about problems they have before we get into crisis mode, and that is what sources are about, “said Waterkotte.

St. Xavier Junior Sabian Swan is one of the 70-plus students who are members of sources in force.

“In daily life we really talk to students, we tell them about sources in force,” said Swan. ‘We just ask them if they are okay … if you are not, do you want to talk to me? Do you need me to listen to you? ‘

We asked Swan what solutions he saw through sources in strength with his colleagues.

“I mean the solutions I have seen … everyone feels more open,” said Swan.

On Friday evening they debuted a bank at the school that shares the suicide hotel number. The bank stays on campus as a physical memory that help is available.

The bank was donated by the banks of the non -profit Josh for consciousness, started by parents who lost their son, Joshua Nadelbach, to suicide.

“They didn’t know he had a hard time, they had no idea,” said Waterkotte. “So what they wanted to do was ensuring that people knew where to run.”

Waterkotte said that there is always a reason to talk about mental health, and she hopes that it will digmatize.

“There is someone in your life who is going to help you, someone in your life who loves you, someone in your life who takes care of you,” said Swan.
